Brent Burns and 2nd Round pick 2012 traded to San Jose for Devin Setoguchi, Charlie Coyle, and 1st round pick (28th overall) Zach Phillips
I like the deal a lot. Wilson has added a great young defensemen to a d-core that was begging for relief. Burns brings a physical game to a very timid Sharks' lineup, coupled with his immense offensive skills that saw him net 15 and 17 goals in his first two NHL seasons and some amazing shootout goals. Not only does he like to throw his weight around, he is not afraid to drop the gloves for a teammate. Also, this is Burns first opportunity on a Cup contending team, hopefully adding to his noticeable intensity on the ice. Finally, Burns is a young (26) player that has been coached by Todd Mclellan in the AHL.
The only issue I have with this deal is the loss of Charlie Coyle, the brilliant 18 year old center play for BU. The deal would have been perfect if Wilson offered any other prospect in the Sharks' system besides Coyle, maybe lower Minnesota's offering draft pick to a third or fourth round pick. I have grown a strong liking to Coyle and was very excited for his time to join the Sharks' lineup. Although they lost a great young player, I still believe the Sharks are a better team after this deal.
Free Agency is very interesting now with this deal, making it no longer necessary to pursue Kevin Bieksa. Now they may be interested in a large, veteran defensemen to mentor and bolt down the now, young Sharks defensive core. The question them comes if San Jose needs to sign Ian White, with Burns now on the team and a Hall Gill player being possibly pursued. Also, the Sharks need to replace Devin Setoguchi. Although not in the Sharks' tops six forwards, he was a 25-30 goal scorer and even had a spot on the first line. Solutions might be, 1. signing Simon Gagne, an aging 30 goal scorer, or trades for 2. James Neal of the Pittsburg Penguins or 3. Alex Burrows of Vancouver Canucks. Neal is on the trading block due to the fact that his tenure in Pittsburg was an absolute failure and the one year remaining on his contract. He will come at quite the price of prospects and draft picks that the Penguins will want in return. Neal is 23 year old, potential 30 goal scorer who still has his best days ahead of him. Alex Burrows is not necessarily on the trading block, but would be a great addition to the Sharks. Like, Neal he would take quality draft picks and prospects, but could easily fill the void of Setoguchi.
The Sharks have 8 million in cap room after the deal, so cap will not be an issue in the offseason. The resigning of the current sharks player should be around 3 million, depending if they sign Ian White, which I say they shouldn't. Although I like White very much, there isn't any space for him in a core that has just added Brent Burns and possibly Hal Gill. Leaving about 5 million to sign Hal Gill which should be less that 1.5 million, and to trade for either Neal or Burrows whose cap hits are both under 3 million.
Lots of options for San Jose now, going to be interesting to see which route they take.

Flyers Renovation Reaction
Where they excellent trades for the Flyers? Absolutely. Where they benifical to the existing Flyers roster? No. I believe that before Thursday night, the Flyers were already cup contenders. It seems that Holmgren has put them in a rebuild situation when, frankly, they didn't need to be. Never the less, the
Flyers now have an excellent young core and a solid goaltender, potential Vezina winner, locked for nine years.
I would like to see the Flyers deal either Chris Pronger or Kimmo Timonen for a young defense men to mesh with the existing porspects that the Flyers have, and keep the other as a veteran defensemen. Also, I would see it necessary for them to find another younger replacement for Danny Briere. I see the Flyers winning multiple cups in the next ten years if they go all out and replace their veterans with younger players.

Offseason Moves: Players Each Team Will Sign
Anaheim Ducks- Simon Gagne is a great fit for this first line heavy team looking for depth offensively. He will provide needed scoring to replace Teemu Selane who will likely retire or leave via free agency.
Atlanta Thrashers-Tim Connolly is the perfect player to play with Kane and the young Atlanta Thrashers. He can be the number one center that the Thrashers have been looking for.
Boston Bruins- Although they are the champions, they still have ways to improve like adding another D-man like Sami Salo. Even though he has injury problems he could cap off very good D-core.
Buffalo Sabres- Antti Miettinen could be a nice fit to a Roy and Vanek line. Potential 25 goal scorer, he could help round out the Sabres offense.
Calgary Flames- They flames have tried many veterans in the #1 center position but I think that Jason Arnott could fill that position well. Iginla and him would be a powerful 1-2 punch.
Carolina Hurricanes-Scottie Upshall is a gritty, hard working player that could score more than 20 goals when playing with Eric Stall.
Chicago Blackhawks- The Hawks need some cheap depth scoring and Chris Higgins is exactly that. He can help balance out the top heavy Blackhawks lineup.
Colorado Avalanche- Need a real goalie like Jean-Sebastien Giguere who has struggled in Toronto and could start fresh in Colorado and add some stability to their young core.
Columbus Blue Jackets- Need a good D-man and they will find it in Eric Brewer. He is a solid D-man on both sides of the puck and will help them be a better team.
Dallas Stars-Vaclav Prospal is a veteran forward who still has his scoring touch and might be able to partly fill the gap left by Brad Richards.
Detroit Red Wings- The Wings need D-man to fill the void left by Rafalski and soon by Lidstrom. Joni Pitkanen is a young puck moving D-man that could fill the void.
Edmonton Oilers-Josh Harding is one who could emerge to be a starting goaltender, stuck behind Backstrom in Minnesota.
Florida Panthers- They will need a goalie and Mike Smith will be there man. He will sign for cheap and can be a good number 1 goalie.
Los Angeles Kings- The Kings need a good winger to play with Richards and or Kopitar and Steve Sullivan is a good fit. The speedy winger could add some needed scoring and provide a veteran influnce.
Minnesota Wild- Michal Handzus will be happy to play as a top six forward on a not so deep team.
Montreal Canadiens- The Canadiens need to solidify their d core and Christian Ehroff will do that for them. He will thake over as their lead pp guy.
Nashville Predators- Michael Ryder is a scorer who could help lift the Preds offense while having a physical edge.
New Jersey Devils- Tomas Fleischmann is a low cap hit center that could potentially play on the first line.
New York Islanders- Curtis Glencross is the only free agent that will sign with a team as bad as the islanders.
New York Rangers- The Rangers need Brad Richards to kick start their offense to make them an instant cup contender. He is a great player and leader.
Ottawa Senators- The Senators will strike out in the market when they try to sign another aging offensive defensemen. Tomas Kaberle will be the man racking in the undeserved dough this season.
Philadelphia Flyers- The Flyers now want a mentor for all their developing talent. Rob Niedermayer is gritty and has cup experience.
Phoenix Coyotes- Ty Conklin is a short term fix to the Coyotes goaltending problems. They wont be able to attract a big name guy so they are going to be stuck with Ty.
Pittsburgh Penguins- Th Penguins still need a winger to balance out their team and Jamie Langenbrunner is a good option to help make them an even better team.
San Jose Sharks- The Sharks need a two way defense man like Kevin Bieksa to make them a legitiment contender. He will help lift the team to the next level
St. Louis Blues- The blues need a small market veteran to help develop its young d men. Craig Rivet will also be good 5th d man.
Tampa Bay Lightning- Tampa will need a big name to fill the void of Eric Brewer. James Wisniewski is the perfect man and he will make their pp even better.
Toronto Maple Leafs- Will need a number one center after loosing out on the Richards sweepstakes. Brooks Laich is no super star, but he will fill the void
Vancouver Canucks- Cory Stillman is a veteran looking for a cup. He will try to help lead the Canucks back to the cup again.
Washington Capitals- Thomas Vokoun is a goalie that could help the Capitals win the cup. He will end all the shenanigans over the young goalies.

Vancouver vs. Boston Game 1 Round 4
When I thought the series was going to high scoring, was I in for a surprise in game 1. A real goaltenders dual, both playing great hockey. I thought that the game was actually quite boring with no scoring until 59 minutes had passed.
Tim Thomas |
The powerplay for both teams was a huge disappointment, go 0 for 12 combined. It really destroyed the flow of the game, especially for Vancouver with the Sedins not seeing much ice time in the first period because they do not play penalty kill.
Also, strange biting incident at the end of the first. Burrows and Bergeron came together and started pushing each other around, Bergeron's glove came up to Burrows' mouth, and he bit down on his finger, covering it up with his own glove. I was very surprised that the league did not suspend or fine Burrows for the incident.

Stanley Cup Finals
My prediction is Boston winning in seven games. I feel that Tim Thomas will completely outplay Roberto Luongo, with Thomas also capturing the Conne Smythe. It will be a very high-scoring and hard fought series, but I see Boston being the better all-around team, deserved of the cup.

Offseason Sharks Moves
1. Do not fire Todd McClellan or any of the Sharks coaching staff. They have done a great job with the Sharks and will help in the future. Also, is it worth it to fire a coach of McClellan's skill and just hire a coach that was fired from a team that finished in the bottom of the league. The problem with the Sharks lies in other areas.
2. Trade Dany Heatley and Torrey Mitchell for Zach Parise and a 1st round pick. Dany Heatley needs to leave town due to enormous 7.5 million dollar contract and lack of production. When Heatley is not scoring, he is not playing strong defense or playing physical and also he has been cited as a poor teammate and crybaby. Zach Parise is an excellent young forward who has the potential to score 50-60 goals in a season playing with the likes of Thornton, Marleau, and Couture. Also, Parise is looking for a new contract, something the Devils may not want to pay him and may rather accept a reasonable trade.
3. DO NOT resign Kent Huskins or Nick Wallin. These two defensemen have outstayed their welcome and signing ineffective aging defensemen will not help us. Also, this clears about 4.5 million off the books to acquire better defensemen.
4. Resign Kyle Wellwood (1.0 million), Devin Setoguchi (2.0), Ben Eager (800,000), Scott Nichol (750,000), Ian White (3.0 million), and Jason Demers (1.0 million). Wellwood, White, and Eager all have performed extremely well since joining the Sharks and it is very important to resign Wellwood and White. Wellwood brings an outstanding pair of hands with a very creative and shifty mind to go along. White is a solid all around defensemen that is very young and will be the cornerstone for the defense for years to come. Ben Eager is a very fast and physical forward that brings a youthful side to the lineup. Nichol does all the right things and never takes a shift off and the Sharks need to resign him for his veteran grindness (Don't know if thats a word). Demers is a puckmover to be that will, with white be the foundation of the Sharks defense in the future.
5. Trade John McCarthy and 1st and 5rd pick for Alex Burrows. Burrows would be a perfect addition for the Sharks to add to their offensive depth.
6. Trade Antero Nittymaki for a 3rd round pick. Nittymaki has played his way into a back up spot behind Nemo and is now obsolete and too pricey (2.0 million) for a guy thats gonna sit on the bench all season.
7. Sign Kevin Bieksa or Eric Brewer. A solid, physical two way defensemen with excellent offensive skills both in the 3 million range. This is the final missing piece to take the Sharks to the promised land.
So deep. It is a real joke to have Pavelski on the third line but that is what makes this team so good. I also see a great faceoff team with a team that can average 4 goals a game. The only missing piece might be a defensive centerman.
This is an excellent d-core that I feel is all two way players. No one player can hurt us with his defensive but they will contribute on offense. Physical and puck moving, the coaching staff should never play one pairing too much because all the pairings are even, keeping everyone fresh and rested.

Bigest Playoff Disappointment
In my mind Antti Niemi is without a doubt the biggest playoff disappointment. Not only were his stats terrible, but his play was almost worse. He let in many weak goals and didn't make key saves when the were necessary. He played well for 4 games of the playoffs but thats it. Only once did he keep us in a game we had no business winning. And not once in the entire 18 game playoffs did he steal one. He made two great saves but at big times he didn't make the important save. During the playoffs it became evident that the sharks must find a new, better goalie to make it anywhere in the playoffs. If people think that Nabby was a choke last year, then regardless of his until now unbeaten playoff record and his stanley cup ring, he will be forever known by the sharks as a choke. The reason that Nabby and Nemo are bad in the playoffs is because they don't make the big saves that demoralize other teams. Goalies who make those saves can let in a weak one here or there. But it is the goalies that don't make the big saves who in the end lose games for their team by letting in a weak goal. Back to back years I have seen the sharks goalie being out played by a goalie that I know is worse (Nabby vs. Nemo and Nemo vs. Luongo). To me the answer to our goaltending problem will not come. The last great goalie that we will have had is Nabby. The only way that we will get another good one is by drafting now that we have Nemo in such a long contract.

Five Best Saves Post Lockout for the Sharks
Saturday, May 21, 2011
Logan Couture
1. Logan Couture was 17% better on faceoffs than Jeff Skinner.
2. Couture had a plus 18 compared to Skinner's suspect plus 3.
3. Couture had 5 less penalty minutes.
4. Not only did Couture have 1 more goal than Skinner, he also had 6 more game winners and 1 overtime winner.
5. Couture had only 7 points less than Skinner while playing 3 less games due to injury.
6. Couture also had more ice time than Skinner per game even playing behind stars Marleau, Thornton, and Heatley.
7. Although the stats can't really prove it, except maybe the plus minus, Couture's defensive is what completely sets him apart from Skinner, whose defense is suspect.
8. Most importantly Couture led his team to playoffs despite a point in January where the Sharks were in 12th place in the West and then leading them to the Conference finals (and maybe THE FINALS who knows?) with, at the moment of the article, 7 goals and 7 assists in 17 games.
