After reading Grant's piece on Jamie Mcginn's hit on Aaron Rome, I have to say I disagree. When watching initially, I thought that there was nothing wrong with the hit by Jamie Mcginn, but upon further review via the replay, it became quite clear that Mcginn hit Aaron Rome straight in the numbers, not in the shoulder as Grant cited. Also, the penalty did not include any hit to the head, it was called boarding. Which I find quite acceptable to assess, a hit from behind should be a penalty, no doubt. What I did disagree with was the 5 and 10 assessed. I believed that was a bit harsh and I don't believe Mcginn deserved a penalty that severe. My best wishes go out to Aaron Rome and hope he makes a speedy recovery and want to see him out there for game 4.
On the topic of Jamie Mcginn, I love his energy and the physical play he brings to the Shark's fourth line, but it seems he gets himself wrapped up in controversial hits. He has now played 5 games in this year's playoffs, and two of them had him sent off for a bad hit (Jamie Mcginn came laterally across the ice and put his shoulder into Brad Richardson's head during game 6 of the first round). I hope he develops into a player that continues the same intensity and physical play, but stays out the post game discussion about his hits. VIDEO OF THE HIT:
