Hit by Jamie McGinn

Jamie McGinn got a five minute major with 8:38 left in the third period after hitting Rome from behind. The Canucks used the five-minute power play to cut the Sharks' lead from 4-1 to 4-3. McGinn hit him cleanly square in the shoulder. The NHL is making big hits illegal. Rome drew a penalty just because he was hurt. In rule 48 it states a lateral or blind side hit to an opponent where the head is targeted and/or the principal point of contact is not permitted- The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a match penalty if, in his judgment, the player attempted to or deliberately injured his opponent with an illegal check to the head. The hit did not go against this rule unless a hit to the shoulder is not permitted.

This is what some sharks had to say.

"To be honest with you, I hate seeing somebody hurt," defenseman Douglas Murray said. "But I get hit like that 10 times a game. I just don't know anymore what's a penalty or not. I get hit like that all the time."
"I finish my checks. I'm not trying to hurt anybody," McGinn said. "It's unfortunate he got hurt. I tried to cut him off. I thought I hit him on the shoulder.
"It's tough. I got into the lineup tonight and thought I was doing a good job. Having to go right back upstairs kind of sucks. I'm glad the boys got the win."
